Tanoliu Royal Rangers

May 8, 2009

Tanoliu 036 - Copy Tanoliu 017 - Copy Tanoliu Royal Ranger group started last Monday. In the morning we did leadership training,  with 2 leaders and 8 small boys looking on, by the end of the first session we had 20 boys listening in. So we ran our first Royal Ranger group for Tanoliu immediately. At least half of the boys were not from the AOG church but were from the village.

They were so keen they learnt and  were able to memorise  the Royal Ranger Pledge straight away.

With God’s help, I will do my best to; serve God, my church and my fellow man; to live by the Ranger code; to make the Golden Rule my daily rule.

The Pastor was going to run Royal Rangers again the next day, to practice what they had learnt. The plan is to run Royal Rangers Sunday afternoons while the families that have walked in for church are still around. He feels this will suit their community best.

Tanoliu is a small village on the north west coast of Efate Island. The church is called “Daberaliu AOG” which in the village language means “fire burning”

Butterflies at Saama

May 1, 2009

Yesterday we went for a drive to Saama Village to visit the Royal Ranger group there. The school holidays had started and some of the boys had gone to the food gardens with their parents, so the numbers were down, but we all  still had heaps of fun.

The boys played “GET IT” a game that is very popular with the RR boys. This was followed by a craft activity and devotional centred around the butterfly. They watched the DVD from field day and enjoyed seeing themselves on the screen.

Did you know that……………..

  • Butterflies taste with their feet
  • Butterflies don’t have noses, they smell with their antennae
  • Butterflies are cold blooded, the dark colours on their wings help them absorb heave from the sun
  • Butterflies can see ultraviolet light that is invisible to humans, they use the ultraviolet patterns to recognise each other.
  • A butterflies mouth is like a drinking straw, it stays rolled up until it is time to eat.
  • A butterfly wasn’t always a butterfly.  It starts as a tiny egg that hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar grows until its time to build a hardened shell around its body called a chrysalis. The caterpillar sleeps inside the chrysalis, its body changes and grows new parts. When it comes out it has become a butterfly, quite a different creature from a caterpillar

The boys learnt that God can change them on the inside to make them a new, glorious creature, just like a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.
